Cactus Without Thorns

As we said at the beginning of this article, there are plenty of cactus varieties that will grow without any thorns. They are becoming more and more popular in homes these days. They seem to cause no accidents, which the thorny ones definitely could do.

But you might ask about the care for the plants with no thorns. Does anything really change then? Not really, we still need to make sure the plant is getting a good amount of sunlight each day but also keeping up the watering schedule is important.

The sunlight the plant requires will be between 6 – 8 hours every day. This will be enough to have the cactus plant keep growing at a steady pace without slowing down. This is actually pretty important as the cactus plant is normally not very fast growing either.

The watering of the cactus plant is of course also very important. This means that you need to keep the soil in a state that the cactus really likes. This can differ a little between some varieties. With that said most cactus plants will want to grow in soil that is slightly dry

We find this makes for the fastest-growing cactus plant at home. They will be collecting sunlight and spending all that energy keeping up the growth. But with this slightly more watered soil it will keep a good supply of this.

In the wild, the thorns do serve some use. They will be collecting water from the soil when it starts to condense. That is actually one of if not the reasons cactus plants can grow in a desert, a place where no other could survive.

Do All Cactus Have Thorns

Most cactus plants will have thorns growing on them. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some out there that won’t have them. There is for example a variety that grows pads that usually doesn’t have any pads. This one is actually completely edible and a great thing to introduce into your diet.

But the thorns serve some use in the wild. They are collecting water condensing from the soil and then dispersing that to the middle part of the stem. Here it will be stored and used when the plant might otherwise have a hard time accessing water.

But if you are growing a cactus plant indoors with thorns and you would like one without then we have some news for you. It’s actually possible to cut the thorns off and not harm the plant.

The thorns are technically a dead part of the plant. So cutting them off there will not be any harm caused.
