How Often Do You Water Thyme

Watering them the best way can be a tricky task. Sometimes you might think that it really needs more water but what actually is happening is that the top soil is dry but the water has all gathered at the bottom instead. So there are some things you need to know about for sure.

.

Knowing when to water thyme is very important to both get a plentiful harvest but also tasty harvests. I follow the rule to only water my thyme about every 9 – 10 days. But I can certainly go over this if I feel the soil is drying out too quickly. That might be because the sun has been shining especially hard one day. But I can also wait longer if it has been raining the last few days or so.

.

Growing any herb is all about getting down to the basics and going by feeling. If you feel that the soil is still a bit wet then you can hold off the watering. If you feel below the surface of the soil and it’s completely dry then you will have to quickly water the thyme. Thyme is a hardy herb that can manage a lot of different climates and environments. This is really what makes it so fun to grow thyme. But again, every 9 – 10 days during the summer, it really comes down to the feel of the soil. Trial and error is always involved in trying something new and learning.

What Is The Best Fertilizer For Thyme

Well, fertilizer for thyme is not really needed. Because it doesn’t need and like a very nutritious type of soil. But using any organic fertilizer that says that it’s either for flowers or even better, herbs is the best route to take. Make sure that it’s organic too. Otherwise it can be a gamble to eat the herb.

.

Even though I said that I don’t really recommend using any fertilizer for thyme. I mean that you shouldn’t use it regularly. I make sure that I don’t do it more than every 6 months or so. This makes the soil nutrient rich enough for the thyme. More than that will actually dull the flavor of the herb. Which I really don’t want to happen because I want to be able to cook with it and not have it just for the show.

.

So know that too much fertilizer will not be good for the plant and what you should be more worried about is the drainage that the soil has. Too much water in the ground will be worse for the plant actually. Some very common with many herbs and overwatering is root rot.

What Kind Of Soil Is Best For Thyme

The best soil for thyme is one that has a very good drainage. This is actually the most important aspect to keep track of. Like I just mentioned above, too much water in the soil on the ground where the thyme is growing will make the roots rot. This can go rather quick if you keep up a schedule of watering too much. So look at the drainage that the soil has first.

.

Fortunately with thyme, it really doesn’t have a lot of demands on the place it grows in. It is actually bad for the plant if there is too much nutrition in the ground. I always say that I grow herbs to use them in culinary endeavors so I want the best flavor possible. The only way for me to get that is by letting the thyme grow in a soil that’s rather dry and rich in nutrients. If you have read about the stuff that makes some wines better than others, it can come down to the water in the ground. Less of it makes the plant work a bit more to survive so the flavors actually intensify.

.

But it can be tough walking such a tight line. If you overdo it then the plant might completely dry out and eventually die. Too much will drown the roots and then you won’t have a planet either. So it really comes down to trial and error and adapting to the elements and what you have to work with.
