Welcome to this article that will be talking about why you might be seeing air roots on your rubber plant. It’s not very common for this to happen in all honesty. Air roots are something that can happen to a lot of plants, especially houseplants which the rubber plant is a part of.
It’s often caused by a small lack of nutrients in the soil. It causes the roots to sort of grow in an unordinary way. The roots are seeking nutrition and one of the ways to get that would be by going above the surface appearance.

Rubber Plant Air Roots
As we said at the beginning of the article, the rubber plant is able to have air roots starting to grow. It’s not really something that you should be worrying about too much. It happens because of a small issue with the soil.
The roots might not be finding all the necessary nutrients they want. That makes them start to grow above the soil instead. In order to try and find some form of nutrient it might be lacking.
It should be said that a completely healthy rubber plant is able to grow in this way and you shouldn’t really worry at all. We strongly recommend you not to try cut or force down any roots that might be appearing above the soil. It will most likely just cause issues down the line with the plant instead.
What you could do however is try and use some fertilizer for the soil. That will hopefully help the plant in its quest to find nutrients. As the plant is growing in the same soil all the time, there won’t be an influx of nutrients to it. Instead we need to provide that manually to the soil ourselves.
Try to use organic fertilizers. That can be found in more or less all gardening stores with a good selection. It will say on the bottle how often it can be used and how it should be diluted. But we strive for only adding it about every 2 months or so to keep some form of moderation.

Do Rubber Plants Have Roots
Rubber plants definitely have roots. They aren’t really that large and will spread sort of like a nest. That’s the fastest and easiest way for the plant to quickly establish itself.
The size of some of the roots will differ of course. The one going deeper might be slightly larger. It’s important that we don’t overwater the soil as that will cause the roots to start to drown. There is oxygen traveling through the soil, perhaps not in large amounts, but some at least.
That oxygen is necessary for the roots to be able to continue to grow and make the rest of the plant flourish. A soil which is kept slightly damp all the time seems to be ideal.

Do Rubber Plants Like To Be Root Bound
Rubber plants do prefer to be root bound. They will grow the best in a place where they can harness the soil and provide a healthy place for the roots to grow in. They want soil rich in nutrients.
Never let the soil dry out too much, keep it slightly damp all the time. That will provide the best possible environment to grow the plant.
