Welcome to this post dedicated to when to take thyme cuttings in the UK. Since the weather here is a bit different compared to where I live I figured it’d be a good idea to share some information to my British readers. When To Take Thyme Cuttings UK

It might be confusing when the best time might be to take cuttings, especially since the UK can be a bit cold at the end of the season. But fear not, we have some tips and tricks that will help you in your decision. Since thyme is such a hardy plant it can manage in most environments. In the UK the summer can be nice and warm but when fall comes around then the temperature drops and winter brings the snow. But even though the thyme plant could be 30 cm deep under snow, it will still come back kicking the next year.

.

I want to mention this because it doesn’t really matter when you take the cuttings because it won’t have a drastic effect on the plant. I like to point it down to two different periods of the year though when the best time can be. Either at the start of the summer when the plant will be growing faster. The second time would be at the end of the summer when the largest harvest of the plant usually takes place. Both of these approaches have their pros and cons.

How Do You Take Thyme Cuttings UK

If you take cuttings at the beginning of the summer then the cuttings will most likely grow pretty quickly because of the higher temperature and the sun being out more during the day. The con of going this route could be that you might lose out on some harvest because your taking cuttings before the growth have really kicked into gear.

.

The second approach was taking cuttings at the end of the summer, at the same time as you would do most of the harvesting anyway. The pro of doing this is that you won’t lose any significant growth on the main thyme plant since it would already slow down at the end of the season. But the thyme cuttings might not grow as fast because the sun’s not shining as much these months. A lot of sunshine will help the seedling grow faster.

.

I want to reiterate again on the question that we had, when is the best time to take thyme cuttings in the UK. Either at the start of the summer or at the end of the summer. Both have pros and cons but the best one in my opinion is the first one. Taking cuttings at the start will have them growing really fast during the sunny summer.
