Weak Dill Flowering

Welcome to this post about why your dill might be weak. It can sometimes be annoying figuring out why the plants you have aren’t growing the way they should. It can be from a number of different reasons. In the case of a herb growing thin or weak it probably has to do with how much sun it’s getting.

But it can also be because the soil is not as healthy as it should be. In this article we will lay out a number of different reasons and some of the best things you can do to fix them.

Are you perhaps wondering how much water you should give your dill and what the downsides of too little or too much is? Then we have written an article dedicated to exactly that. You can find it here, Does Dill Like Lots Of Water.

Why Is My Dill So Weak

Like we said in the beginning of this article. The biggest reason for your dill not growing the way it should, by this we mean slow and thin is because of access to sunlight. We usually recommend that any herb or plant that is growing indoors will need about 10 hours of sun each day. If you have it outdoors however then it would be enough with maybe 6 – 8 hours. This really just comes down to the sun being a lot stronger outside directly, then through a window. Pretty obvious maybe.

One of the things we have seen that works really well is growing the dill in a pot and then being able to move it around the garden. This can be a huge benefit as it allows us to make sure it gets all the sun it needs but also puts it in the shade when it maybe is getting too much.

Since dill is a herb that only lives for 2 years, it won’t do any harm having it in a pot. Otherwise, with a lot of perennial herbs you will want them growing on freeland to further increase the root development of them.

How Do You Grow Strong Dill?

So the sun is the main thing to look for and get correct. Other things that also are very important are how much water is in the soil and the health of it. If it’s very dry then the dill just won’t grow a whole lot. It likes to have a damp soil that never dries out or gets too soggy. It’s a balancing act that is very important. The beneficial bacterias in the soil are also very important to keep happy.

This is best done by fertilizing the soil every now and again. We recommend doing it about 3 – 4 times a year. The best fertilizer will always be manure as it’s the most natural and thriving one. Buying organic fertilizers from the store will work very well too.

I want to reiterate again on what we have been talking about in this article here. The biggest reason for dill growing thin or weak is the lesser access to sunlight it might have. If grown outside you want to have it get at least 6 – 8 hours but indoors this increases to about 10 hours.

Other things to manage is watering the plant. Never let it dry out completely, as then you won’t have a lot of dill left for the year. A final suggestion is harvesting the plant as well. Cutting of a stem every now and again will let it grow out new ones. But don’t do too much. If it’s still weak then never more than 10 % of the plant at once.

If you want to learn more about the soil that dill likes to grow in, we have written an entire article dedicated to this specific question. You can find it here, Does Dill Like Dry Or Wet Soil.
